Dental Implants Lacey, Ruston, and Tumwater
If you are missing a tooth, you are probably quite familiar with all the hassles that go along with it.
Not only is it more challenging to eat your favorite foods, but you may also be feeling the effects of the social stigma that tends to accompany missing teeth. It’s unfair, but people with missing teeth often face social and even professional consequences as a result of their missing teeth.
At Tranquility Dental Wellness, our emphasis is on treating the health, function, and beauty of your smile. We understand that missing teeth can affect all three of these aspects, which is why we offer high-quality dental implants to our patients who need them.

What are some of the health consequences of missing teeth?
In addition to negatively affecting the appearance of your smile, missing teeth can also bring about serious health consequences. The roots of your teeth and the bone in your jaw work together to keep your teeth and your jawbone healthy. The jawbone helps support the teeth, and the roots stimulate the jawbone so that it will stay strong.
When you lose a tooth, this relationship ends. Without a root to support, your body stops sending nutrients to the jawbone, and it is no longer able to stay strong. This leads to the jaw bone becoming weaker and shrinking. Eventually, other teeth are likely to become loose and then lost, creating a chain reaction that can leave your mouth looking aged and sunken. This has a serious impact on your overall health and well-being. To help avoid these health problems, dental implants can be placed in the smiles of many of our Lacey, Tumwater, and Tacoma dental patients.
How do dental implants help maintain the jawbone?
Dental implants offer a unique approach to tooth replacement. Instead of just focusing on replacing the crown (the visible portion of your tooth), a dental implant replaces the root as well, stopping the destructive pattern that begins when you lose a tooth.
Implants tend to be a very successful restorative dentistry option for patients who have lost one or more teeth because they help maintain the structure of your jawbone. When a natural tooth is lost, and there is an edentulous (toothless) space left in the mouth, the natural teeth that surround the space are left at risk. As described above, a missing tooth can lead to a shrinking jawbone and the eventual loss of other teeth. Additionally, when a tooth is lost, your gums can start to recede. The quality of the entire mouth is affected by missing teeth, which is where dental implants come in.
Dental implants help support and preserve the structure of the jaw in several ways. When a dental implant is placed, a titanium post is inserted into the jawbone. Over time, this titanium post will fuse with the existing jawbone, anchoring the post to your mouth’s natural structure. With this post in place, the jawbone is at far less risk of atrophying — and the natural teeth on either side of the implant are once again supported.
The different areas of your mouth are designed to work together in harmony, and this becomes difficult when tooth sites are left empty and exposed. The spaces of missing teeth that are not replaced are at greater risk for the build-up of food, bacteria, and decay. The health of the jawbone is improved when there is a natural or artificial tooth with both a root (the titanium post of a dental implant) in the jawbone and a crown (the porcelain top of a dental implant) to help with chewing and speech.

We’re dedicated to making every dental experience special and comfortable – even those that involve a surgical procedure! If you have any anxieties about your procedure, please let us know. We take every possible precaution to make sure that you are completely comfortable every step of the way.
Is it painful to receive dental implants?
It is not typical to experience significant pain when receiving dental implants. In the vast majority of cases, a local anesthetic is used to numb the area, much like with a dental filling. This means you will be awake during the procedure, but should not feel anything more than periodic pressure.
For many patients, the worst part of the dental implant placement surgery is the associated noises such as drilling. If you are concerned about how listening to these noises might affect your ability to relax during the procedure, you are welcome to bring a pair of headphones and listen to music or a podcast to help distract yourself.
Typically, the most painful part of receiving dental implants is the recovery period post-surgery, but even this should not exceed mild-to-moderate levels of pain. It is normal to experience soreness, sensitivity, or discomfort around the cheeks, chin, lips, or under the eyes. Mild bleeding and bruising are also commonly seen following the procedure.
While there can be mild discomfort associated with receiving dental implants, it is important to keep the big picture in mind: A healthy implant can provide you with years of chewing, eating, and speaking normally when a lost tooth might otherwise have compromised your daily quality of life. Dental implants truly do provide a solution to a difficult dental problem!
Options Designed to Fit Your Individual Needs
At Tranquility Dental Wellness, we believe in creating a treatment plan that is right for you and your specific circumstances. While some patients only need one or two individual teeth replaced, others require several implants placed throughout the mouth. Whatever your dental implant needs, our dental office can help.
Single missing teeth are typically replaced with a crown that is carefully crafted to blend in flawlessly among your other teeth and look and feel natural. If you are missing multiple teeth, however, we can look at options like implant-retained bridges or dentures that combine the bone retention benefits of implants without the costs associated with replacing each tooth with an individual implant.
We invite you to call and schedule a consultation at our Tumwater, Lacey, or Tacoma dental office. Deciding to move forward with dental implants is a big step, and we will discuss your needs and your goals and work together with you, as your partner, to create a treatment plan that is right for you.
